Shearing Challenge Fundraiser
for the
HEART FOUNDATION
Saturday 12th April 2008

On a relaxing Autumn day, Just Shearing held the inaugural Shearing Challenge , raising funds for the Heart Foundation.
Saturday 12th April was the day of shearing machines humming away constantly as 23 shearers lined up to shear the waiting merino sheep & Samm cross sheep.
Over 300 adults & children were shepherded through the starting gate was a fantastic attendance.
It was great to see people had come from Adelaide, Yorke Peninsular, Barossa & Murraylands and elsewhere as well as many locals!
 
There were things to see & do through out the day.

There was a display of Neville Loffler’s  Dohne sheep , John Heinsen’s Working dog display, Have a go shearing with David Reichelt assisting for the day. This proved to be quite popular with a few non shearers having a go at what it is like for the shearer to shear! David was also selling his catch of fish for the week giving the Heart Foundation $1 per kg sold.
 
For the younger folk there was a colouring in competition which children could enter previously or on the day as well as a writing competition which was for 10 years to adult.
 
Cooper Pfitzner won the 0-3 category, Caitlin Keleher won the 4-6 category & Gary Schutz won the 7-10 category.
There were 3 entries for the writing competition with Naomi Voigt winning the prize.
 
John Hayes organised the boot throwing competition & was surrounded by many happy youngster wanting to have a go .The winner was the throw that was the closest to the target. Solomon Voigt just nicked the bag & declared the winner!
 
Have a guess at the amount of the jelly beans took the eye of many guesses from people & Mary Morris has a jar of jelly beans to enjoy with her spot on winning guess of 113 jelly beans!
 
The morning tea competition saw 5 entries, with 2 judges & 2 shearers judging the event, 1st went to Carol Voigt,  2nd went to Coral Jenke.

While spectators enjoyed the shearing competition, there were plenty of food supplies by the St John’s Parents & Friends ranging from Steak sandwiches to hotdogs etc as well as scrumptious doughnuts. Bower progress group kept everyone refreshed with a range of drinks while Impact canopies had milkshakes & animal balloons & other small items for kids to enjoy. Animal balloons being a hit amongst the junior folk!
 
Displays from Web South – local computing business and Remlap manufacturing – being oilskin & safety clothing as well as denim clothing & dungarees were available.
Just Shearing will be stocking the Remlap brand for those who had a look at their display.
 
Pony rides were also a success with the children. Especially with Jourdon Jenke who seemed to be constantly comparing the riding of both ponies!!! She is proud to say she had over 10 rides!!!!!
Shearer’s supplies were also available form the shearing shop for those who had time to look!!! The shearing competition kept everyone on their toes!

At the end of the final sheep shorn weary shearers could rest & were awaiting the tallying of the scores.

Many people have asked if we are going to do this again.
 
Due to the great response to the day & it’s success we are looking at making it a biannual event! Unless demand requires annual!
